Sunday June 7, 2004 - Saturday June 19, 2004 Prepared: June 21, 2004 THINGS WE NEED: *The items will be left on the list until they are physically received in Alert.* - tire pressure guage (CELINE) - Aethalometer filters & petri cases (ARMAND) Please note: Inventories are current as of the date the report is written. AEROSOL PROGRAM Aethalometer 1 Last blank on day 152j, 2004. O.K. Aethalometer 2 Currently not in use. PSAP Program O.K. Nephalometer O.K. CNC Counter Power bar malfunction caused pumps to shut down sometime overnight between 169j and 170j (possibly related to small brown-out experienced on station at ~0030z, 170j). Bypassed power bar (i.e. plugged pumps directly into other outlets, not connected by relay to data logger), and pumps were back online at ~1445z on 170j. Power bar will be examined by DND electricians and possibly returned to Downsview if it cannot be fixed here. O.K. High Volume Samplers O.K. Changed outdoor PAN inlet filters on 166j from 1850z - 1905z. Rebooted PAN laptop on 170j at 1319z (Peak Simple was frozen - possibly since the previous night when there was a small brown-out on station at ~0030z, 170j; I think that Peak Simple did not initialize properly after the computer restarted itself following the brown-out). Changed from Ultra-Zero air generator to cylinder on 166j at 1925z (suspected problem with pump for zero air generator). O.K. CH4/CO2/N2O/SF6 GC Changed from Ultra-Zero air generator to cylinder on 166j at 1925z (suspected problem with pump for zero air generator). Performed ECD wipe test on 6890 and 5890 on 168j. GC1 flame out on arrival at lab on 170j (flame had been out since ~0030z, 170j - due to small brown-out experienced on station at this time); flame re-lit, back on ALERT.S at 1005z. O.K. CO GC O.K. Although we didn't have a show tour come through this year, they've arranged something even better for the July 1 celebrations: a local band! I've actually heard them rehearsing a few times, and the only word I can think of to describe them is "absolutely fabulous" (okay, I know that's two words - but that's just how good they are!). This band has one guy who is both the drummer AND the lead singer, and man oh man is he ever good! I can't remember his name right off the top of my head, but he is pretty incredible. I can't wait to see their show for Canada Day! Hurricane is also in full swing now, and the heavy lift helicopter crew (i.e. the civilian chopper and crew) arrived from Eureka on the weekend. I took it upon myself to do some "networking" with a couple of the crew members (the same guys from last summer, so they remember Tim) and have hopefully laid the groundwork to getting the DOE crew some chopper tours. So keep your eyes peeled in future kevinanderson.ca updates! That's all for now. Lates, --K Kevin Anderson Alert Baseline Operator My second weekend has come and gone and I'm getting into the swing of the Alert lifestyle. I've joined Wendy's belly dancing classes, which have been very fun and most of the time we end the classes laughing hysterically. Let's just say I never expected to be in the Arctic taking belly dancing lessons. The plan is to perform for the Canada Day festivities- I didn't realize embarassing myself came with this job! I had my first experience in FM radio procedure last week and it wasn't pretty. Kevin was nice enough to take the tape and play it for everyone on trivia night! Sunday night Bingo was profitable- I may become a bingo addict over this year because I cleaned up yesterday! I could get used to winning money. That's all for now. Until next week, Maria Maria Vavro Alert Baseline Operator (In Training) Hi I'm still having a great time here in Alert! The weather has been mild, and the purple saxifrage is starting to bloom - it's beautiful. It has been nice enough to go running outside, which I like much better than running on a treadmill. My belly dancing group has been practicing quite a bit for our upcoming Canada Day performance, and hope to have time to make ourselves some costumes out of whatever we can find in the sewing room. Hope the weather in Downsview is also dandy. bye for now Wendy Frise Assistant Baseline Operator
