SHIPPING Shipping Received: NONE Shipping Sent: NONE MAIL Mail Received: NONE Mail Sent: NONE Alert Weekly News Canada Day celebrations went off without a hitch up here! More or less. It seems that the Maximum Doctor (or Maxi, for short) had the big idea that all of the events (including the band, the dancers, and the karaoke contest) were all going to happen outside. I guess he also thought that it was going to magically get a lot warmer than it did - well, it didn't, and we moved to Plan B, which was to hold most of the events in the Arctic Club (including the big concert - did I mention my band yet?). Needless to say, CO's Commendation (which was the name of our band) stole the show (well, actually if the truth be known, Wendy's dancing stole the show - but don't tell her I said that). It was a pretty fun night, and it was probably the most people I've seen up at the Arctic Club in a long long time (which I'm going to attribute to the band, and not Wendy's dancing, although it may actually be the other way around!). Lest anyone think that the concert was the only event of the Canada Day weekend, there were a tonne of other things to keep us all busy. The combined team of Vimy, the Zoo, HOC, and Ole Folks (me) won the softball tournament. We had an actual outdoor medals parade (and if you saw it, you might have been lead to believe that some of these guys had never marched before in their lives - it was pretty funny to heckle them from the sidelines), which was followed by a memorial service (including bagpipes) at the end of the runway. There was a hike to Crystal Mountain (or so I'm told - I was in bed), a polar dip (again, hearsay; again, bed), and of course the obligatory Alert bonfire and barbeque. All in all, if you couldn't be in Ottawa for Canada Day (which I certainly couldn't), this wasn't a bad place to be! That's all for now. Lates, --K Kevin Anderson Alert Baseline Operator Hello everyone, Another week in Alert has passed and it's hard to believe that I've been here almost a month. Time is flying by and I actually keep getting surprised at how many activities people arrange in order to pass the time - there's always something to look forward to! The Canada Day celebrations went smoothly and Alert Idol was a big success - all the participants were fun to watch and Kevin's band was a hit with the crowd. On Friday afternoon I participated in the Volksmarch and yesterday I hiked out with a small group of people to Crystal Mountain. The weather lately has been fairly foggy and during the bonfire on Thursday evening, I think everyone was a bit shocked when it started raining! Last night, I was lucky enough to go out with Troy (Eggman) on the ATV to check out the bird nests with him and generally see what kind of work he, Birdman, and Claire do while they are here every summer. It was a great chance to see some of the area around the station and it turned into a mini wildlife adventure - we spotted two seals, an arctic hare, three kinds of bird playing in the water, and a wolf came within about two feet of my ATV! I know I had a huge smile on my face the whole time! There is a good chance that I will be investing in an ATV or dirtbike when I return to Ontario!! Take care and until next week, Maria Maria Vavro Alert Baseline Operator (In Training) Good day This past week has been really fun with lots of Canada Day celebration. On Thursday night, my little dance troupe performed our Egyptian bellydance at the Alert Idol talent show, and it was a hit! I also performed my own dance and won the first prize certificate with $35 to spend at the Gougemart. Yesterday I joined a small group who drove half way to Crystal mountain and then hiked the rest of the way up, and there was an amazing view from the top of the mountain. This morning (Sunday), we had a girls-only goddess spa day in our office. It was very relaxing. We listened to girl music, did our nails, gave each other back massages, and gossiped. The only thing I regret from this weekend was missing the polar dip because of an upset stomach. I think there will be another chance to try this out while I'm here. bye for now Wendy Frise Assistant Baseline Operator
