This report is late because Maria had to go south for personal reasons. She is on this plane today, coming in from Thule. Bruce McArthur, Taneil Uttal, and Bob Stone are departing after a cloudy, snowy week of tweaking and adjusting the equipment. Bruce also had a chance to repair the Brewers and in the monitoring mode again. The next report will include our SEARCH (NOAA) observations as well. I organized an open house at the lab on August 21st from 2-4pm. We had 10 people come out to see what we do up there. The goal was to enlighten the personnel on why we don't want people driving up to the lab, why we need phone calls for burns, incinerators, and Tx visits. It also taught them a little bit about atmospheric chemistry. The CO and SWO toured the facility on the previous day. Both have been very open to cooperating and discussing EC's presence on the base. Having Taneil and Bob here has helped raise our profile because of the US presence at the site. I encourage any visiting scientists to give a general talk, send posters of their results, and help us to keep the GAW on thier minds. Anyway, it's still a lot of fun here, and I'm looking forward to welcoming Maria back in a few minutes. We wish you all a great week and weekend! Celine Audette Arctic Coordinator Hello everyone, Another busy week in Alert! Three visitors arrived to the GAW lab this week - Senen and two guys from NOAA, Brian and Jim, here to set-up the SEARCH equipment. I've heard from Senen that the weekly updates are one of the more popular sections of the report, so I thought I had better start living more wildly so I'll have lots of stories to tell by the end of the week! It was interesting to hear some of Brian's stories after living in Antarctica twice and to listen to some of the similarities and differences between the lifestyle there and Alert. With Kevin heading out on Wednesday, it was pretty rowdy on station Monday and Tuesday night with the Zoo hosting two excellent parties in his honour. It was a hard to see that plane taking off knowing that it was full of alot of fun people from the station. This will be another difficult week since alot of the summer crew and Wendy are leaving, plus BoxTop will be ending, so by the end of the week, the station will almost be down to its winter numbers. The weather has been gorgeous lately, which was lucky for the BoxTop olympics. We had a good crowd arrive from Thule to participate and overall it was a great weekend. Friday night, the station put on a Fear Factor competition and on Saturday morning, there was a polar dip, which was just slightly chilly! I was able to go to Thule on Sunday and since there were only two of us on the plane, the pilots allowed us to sit in the cockpit for the whole trip, as well as the landing. There were strong winds in Thule, so the landing was pretty choppy, but that made it more entertaining to be watching from the cockpit. We were also lucky enough to see a bright rainbow at the end of the runway. Well, I guess that's it for now. Hope everything is well in Downsview and until next week, Take care, Maria Maria Vavro Alert Baseline Operator Good Day This is my last week here in Alert and I'm feeling a little strange about leaving. The time went so fast and I haven't had a lot of time to get myself ready to go. This past weekend I competed with the Alert team in the Boxtop Olympics against a team from Thule. They flew here from Thule on Friday night and we played ball hockey, volleyball, and had a relay race. Then we all flew to Thule to compete in golf, bowling and an orienteering race. Our team won ball hockey, relay race and golf and got to bring the Boxtop trophy back to Alert with us. I had so much fun, and feel very lucky that I got to go on this neat trip before going back down South. This is my last weekly report so I just want to say thanks to everyone down south who supports us up here at the GAW Lab later Wendy Frise Assistant Baseline Operator
