Sandy and Hayley who were scheduled to leave last week have been stuck here for one more week due to servicing of the HERC in Trenton. Although they were disappointed to miss their plans down south, I think they've been enjoying themselves and have been socializing quite abit with the media. On Saturday, we celebrated Oktoberfest and enjoyed some German food. Chad and Curtis also put on an acoustic show and sang for about an hour. It was nice to do something different than the usual Saturday night activities and I think everyone was impressed with their abilities! Well, I guess that's it for now... Take care, Maria Maria Vavro Alert Baseline Operator Gooday! Alert has turned into a vacation hotspot! There are about 7 extra people on the station with nothing to do and it can be attributed to another plane delay. They seem to enjoy their time away from civilization. They also seem to think it's a non stop hangover here. I'd say they are correct on both views. This saturday at Octoberfest I played a short concert with another guy on station named Curtis. We played for close to an hour. It started off pretty well, but once we got past our half way point the talent started to slip away...I was dropping picks, curtis was losing his voice and people began to talk. But it all ended on a good note when we wrapped things up with sweet home alabama. It was nice to just get up there and let loose and to not care if I did perfect or not. It was a good experience at least. That's about it for now. Chad Guertin, Assistant Baseline Operator Hi all, Well my luck on planes has run out and Hayley and I have been stuck here for an extra week. It would not have been so bad had I not missed some important family stuff at home but I guess that I should know better by now. I'm not sure if Maria has mentioned it but there is a group of media folks up here (stuck with us, we came up on the plane with them) and Hayley and I have befriended these guys. They are an absolute hoot and have kept us entertained a lot; my cheeks actually hurt from laughing so much! We have been taking them around the area and just the other day we went and played on the huge chunks of ice on the runway. Hayley and I made every attempt to tackle Nathan (the journalist from Yellowknife) but I ended up with a back full of snow and Hayley ended up with a couple of bruises on her ribs - not to mention the state in which our egos were left! It was great fun, though, to frolic (yes frolic) in the snow and act like children. The fellows at the Zoo have been showing their usual hospitality and last Tuesday when I innocently asked "where can a girl get a cocktail around here?", the Zoo promptly offered their house and a fine cocktail party ensued. Of course, later that night we found out that the plane was cancelled so it turned from cocktails to whiskey in no time. Fun was had by all until the next day when a certain media coordinator captain (not to mention any names ...Captain Joe Frey) decided it was his duty to tell the (rather uptight) CO that the party at the Zoo went until 2 am (since the media is here there is a rule that all house bars be shut down by 11pm on weekdays) and so the Zoo has been closed for a week - huge bummer. Lets just say, he is very popular on station right now. Saturday night was Oktoberfest and, while that aspect of the party was not very successful the evening was great fun (they couldn't find any polka music much to my dismay). Being a good German girl and all I was looking forward to Schnapps and polkas. The highlight of the night was when our little Chad and Curtis (a Zoo fellow) played acoustic guitar for the station. It was quite a treat to sit and listen to some talent! After that the place cleared out and the dancing started. SIDE BAR HERE: You know, I'll never understand men...there are about 10 women on station and about 7 of them were at the bar dancing on Saturday night. The place was dead except for a few smarter fellows who took the opportunity to dance with the ladies. So, if I hear one more complaint about there not being enough woman on station I will simply refer to missed opportunities! END OF SIDE BAR Well, that's about all from this end of the world. While Hayley and I will continue to play the waiting game up here please send good vibes (and a plane while you are at it! Keith if you are listening??? A plane ...please??? Keith???). See attached photo. Hope to see you guys soon!! Sandy Steffen, MSCs Frustrated Stranded Chemist
