Ice Station SHEBA: A year on the ice |
|
|
The first
challenge was finding a floe, a task that was difficult given the light
ice conditions. Typical floes were only 1 m thick. After considerable
searching we found a floe that was 1.6 m thick and substantial enough to
serve as a base of operations for Ice Station SHEBA. The next challenge
was building a camp and installing the scientific equipment. Two ships,
the CCGC Des Groseilliers and the CCGC Louis St. Laurent, and over 100
people, were involved in this effort.
