The trigger xmfr has a nasty rattle. No flash Nasty rattle and white marking seem OK. Rattle really only on night mode. replace power supply board and HV lamp came on. replaced broken flash tube. flash bright all modes. Replaced K4. All OK. 100m S (#2) dim flash. The set of resistors slung from the underside of the roof had fallen down and was resting on the monitor board. Very bad smells. I suspect a new resistor pack is required at minimum. Elevator wouldn't go: The people elevator wouldn't go. The North door interlock was very warm, nearly hot, to the touch. Cycling it a few times seems to have made it work. Bruce called Howie at Rack and Pinion and place a repair request. Since the carriage is working OK and since I think the interlock is working again, we kept using the elevator. ----- 2008-1022 Bartram Sergio finished fixing strobes Friday. Howie stopped by and drained the water from the elevator door switch. He'll replace it next regular visit. Building is gettting too cold for the GMD carbon gear. I'll install a normal thermostat in the middle of the room with the possibility of controlling one North wall AC as stage 2. I changed the Visitor's Building thermostat to System: Auto. It should now do heat or cool as needed. I removed the day-of-week and periods of the day -- the thermostat is now simple Heat at setpoint, Cool at setpoint. ----- 2008-10-28 Bartram Converted the main building heat/AC to external Thermostat. There is no direct on-off switch connected on the unit -- use the thermostat. The new thermostat is a Honeywell 8000 series just like the Visitor bld. This one is configured for 2 stage electric (fast) heat and 2 stage cooling. I set the thermo to NOT have days or set-back periods -- only heat and cooling set points. I expect: Fan: Auto or Circ System: Auto Heat setpoint: 20 C Cool setpoint: 24 C (orig set 25C, Jon asked for 24 a few days later) If Jon Knoffler says the range is too wide, I'll narrow it down some to make the CO2 monitor work OK. The unit has two banks of 3 phase resistance heat. The heaters are interlocked to not come on if there is no air flow. The thermo should be asking for fan at the same time as it starts asking for heat, and the fan should run for 1.5 minutes after heat. I don't know the extra temp change needed to get the second stage of heat to kick in -- I guess about 1.5 C. The unit air conditioner was not a simple system. The old wiring had the compressor running at ALL times until the pressure high limit cut it out. The old thermostat actually controlled a freon valve just before the inside heat exchanger, so it would leave high pressure freon in the outside plumbing unless cooling was requested. There is an extra "hard start time delay" circuit that I don't understand -- the diagram shows it bypassing what I think is a low pressure cut out switch via a time delay relay. The actual wiring doesn't have the low pressure switch bypassed like the diagram. I put in a new "AC" relay run by the thermostat stage one cooling. The relay powers the freon valve to let freon flow, and provides power to the compressor relay. I'm still running the hard start. Stage two of the cooling is wired over to a relay in the North West corner of the room and switches all the power to one outlet for the Window units. I expect the upper unit to be plugged in to the controller outlet. Again, I think the temp difference beyond the stage 1 cooling is likely about 1.5 C to get the second Ac running. We should consider if we want the stage 1 and stage 2 selections to be changed on occassion to spread the cycle life. Sergio reports that one strobe (OWL Obstruction Warning Light) is very dim at night. I think he was talking about 100m NW. He has a new 1 uF cap on order. He is working on getting a Campbell to report the Stroble system reporting logging through HAL, and back to Boulder. Trouble with the phone connection between Boulder and BAO security system. While there have been roughly daily dropouts, I have the system re-trying once each 5 or 10 minutes. Since last Friday (2008-10-24), the system did not reconnect. I called both numbers 303-828-9216 BAO and x7014 (1-1007) and both sounded ok. It still wouldn't connect. Then will talking with Sergio about strobes, the system completed the call and started working. It showed a download error, so I forces a complete credential download to both panels. Radiometris will install an engineering labled Temp and humid profiling radiometer on the sky walk at BAO visitors, with 3G connected PC inside. Radiometrics will have tiny loggers on the tower. Vaisala will have sondes on the tower and will launch sondes. Hoping to see some nice abrupt inversions at low altitude to compare tower, sonde and radiometer results. Should be IOP Thursday 11-13+14 and some next week, then gone. 2008-11-07 took Jim Turba of Vaisala up to 10 m to show typical platform -- actual typical platforms start a bit higher. 2008-11-10 Dan Wolfe is back from the cruise, Sergio is out on the next leg of the cruise. 2008-11-10 morning Fred Solheim of Radiometrics placed "cigar" data loggers at nX50 0..6. tye wrap the white cylndr to deck North side platform, SW corner. cigar is hanging from cap. took about an hour total. The sonde is supported by its antn, tye wrapped and taped to deck just outside elevator on North. later afternoon rtn to 200 to change temp sensor 2008-11-11 down load data to USB stick. Quick trip to 100 with Turba to reboot sonde that stopped sending temp/hum. Made more elevator power box keys. I'll put two on strings looped into my and Sergio's buckets. That might reduce the number of times he and I forget to put the key back. Two final dups tied with string in bottom of key box. I want keypad on elevators and logging on elevator power. Building AC/Heat seems to be running OK. Bruce Bartram 2008-11-17 Monday Bruce Bartram Last Friday was a cold windy day after a light snow and high wind event overnight (2008-11-14 small hours Zulu through dawn). Vaisala wanted to service their sondes at nX50. We went up at 20z and were back down by 21z. Later 150m was doggy, but the elevator glitched and stopped running up several times and I decided that it was too cold and breezy to work on the interlocks if the problems wasn't glitchy 3-phase power. We came down from 100m by pressing down after each of the roughly dozen un-commanded stops. Also the CU Aerospace students, contact Nicole Dudley 719-761-5458, came out at about 2130z to try dropping ARA brand micro sondes (actually non-working dummies) to measure fall speed at to test their idea of delaying the initial streamer deployment. Took two students to 50m and they dropped their 5 suragate sondes. The wind was like 10m/s when we started, but seemed to drop during the test (came back up later as Jim@Vaisala and I headed back to 150 -- see above). The students will be back out today (Monday). Monday 1730z or so Vaisala power cycled 295, 100 to make them talk again. started to replace sensor at 150 -- fileter cap popped and we removed that level. Vaisala thinks Thursday is target to remove there tower gear. Test has been running and last nights inversion seems a decent candidate. I think the project winds up Wednesday afternoon. Vaisala and other sonde users have had conflicting signals at Visitor's building. Turns out to be the NASA solar unit on the skywalk using its GOES data link. A few minues each hour at like xx:15. ----- 2008-11-19 Bruce Bartram The Vaisala + Radiometrics experiment is winding down today. The last balloon flight is in the air about now (15z) and I'll be heading up with Vaisala (Shawn this time) to pull their tether sonde instruments from the tower. Radiometrics will be leaving the radiometer at the Visitor's building for a while longer and I'll pull their little loggers later, after Thanksgiving. Gave a tourist ride to Stick Ware (Radiometrics) and June from NCAR. June is involved with balloons and sondes at NCAR. I'll copy the data today and take it in to Dave Welsh.
